What is PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder is a stress/anxiety related condition. After a trauma, a person’s body struggles to cope with stresses they face in the future. They may be:
- Quick to feeling extreme levels of anxiety.
- Reach with fear to triggering events, like loud noises.
- Avoid potentially enjoyable situations for fear of triggering the PTSD.
- Feeling like you are reliving the event, with or without flashbacks.
- Dreams or nightmares about the traumatic event.
- Substance use to try to forget the event.
In severe cases, a person can enter a state where they are transported back to the event and react to the current world as though it is the day it occurred.
Many people with PTSD also struggle with anxiety and depression.
