Medication Management
What do psychiatric medications treat?
Some mental health conditions can be managed with therapy alone, while others are effectively treated medication. Sometimes,
the most successful treatment combines the two. For example, a patient with OCD may benefit from exposure therapy as well as a
medication to decrease their symptoms while they practice techniques they learn in therapy.
Are psychiatric medications dangerous?
While all medications come with side effects, the medications prescribed by your provider are generally safe when used as
prescribed and your provider will discuss the side effects, risks and benefits of a medication prior to prescribing a medication
therapy for you.
Is needing medication a sign of weakness?
Absolutely not. This is a misconception about those who need or choose to use psychiatric medications to improve their overall well
being. Just as it’s important to take care of your physical health, it is equally important to take care of your mental health.
What medication will my provider prescribe me?
Your provider will take into account your unique symptoms, medical, physical, psychiatric, family and social history to choose
the most appropriate medication for you. Psychiatric medications are classified as antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications,
antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and stimulant/non-stimulant medications.
