Why Are Bariatric Surgery Psychological Evaluations Necessary?

Bariatric surgery can be life changing in many positive ways. But it is also surgery, and one that is also by definition “life-changing” in that it requires many lifestyle changes in order to commit to it successfully. During your psychological evaluation, we look at:

  • Current Mental Health – Bariatric surgery is not mental health care. Those that are struggling with mental health issues may also find it more difficult to recover from and adapt to life with gastric bypass. Resilient mental health is considered an important part of making sure that you are ready for the procedure.

  • Expectations – You and your doctor have determined that bariatric surgery will be beneficial for your physical health and wellness. But it is also important that patients have realistic expectations. We make sure that you understand what life is like during and after weight loss, and whether you have a strong understanding of what social changes may occur as well. 

  • Past and Present Weight Loss Tactics – Any surgery, including bariatric surgery, should only be considered when non-surgical interventions have failed. We make sure that you have truly tried other options and that it’s clear that this is the choice that will best help you. 

There are specific guidelines that we have for evaluation. We are honest in our assessments, because we also want to make sure that you’re ready so that you’re able to appreciate the benefits of the road ahead.
