What is GLP-1 Weight Loss Therapy?

Glp-1 weight loss therapy is a relatively new form of weight loss therapy that relies on medications to mimic the glp-1 hormone in the body. This is a type of FDA approved therapy for people with obesity or who are overweight with specific health conditions. However, it is important that you find glp1 weight loss therapy from a qualifying treatment center either through in person consultations or online medication management services.

While it has gained popularity in the media prescribed for off-label purposes and a simple route to weight loss, this FDA approved medication is ideally suited to those with qualifying conditions. 

Who Should Use GLP-1 Weight Loss Therapy

GLP-1 weight loss drugs include a host of medications like:

  • Ozempic
  • Zepbound
  • Wegovy
  • Mounjaro

While these medications have been used for several years, they have made recent headlines as a form of weight loss because of their ability to control insulin and blood glucose levels, tricking the body into believing it is full in situations where it might not otherwise do so.

As this type of therapy has been promoted in social media for off label use, it’s important to remember that these medications are designed to treat serious health concerns and still require a professional health assessment. This has been approved by the FDA for people with

  • A BMI of 30 or higher
  • A BMI of 27 or higher who also have type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea

As a weight loss strategy it should be used for the conditions listed above with an understanding of the potential for adverse side effects and the high risk of those side effects. 

How GLP-1 Weight Loss Therapy Works 

Glp-1 drugs mimic your natural glp-1 receptor agonists so they function the same as the GLP-1 hormone in your body, a hormone that gets released after eating. 

  • These drugs bind to those receptors in your brain so that you feel full much sooner and you don’t eat as much
  • They also help to slow down the rate at which food is processed from your stomach so that you can feel fuller for much longer
  • They keep food in your stomach for longer to also improve your blood sugar. 
  • They release more insulin if you have high blood sugar to help decrease your glucagon levels

All of these functions are why it is ideal for people who are overweight with related health conditions like type 2 diabetes.

GLP1 medication is typically given as a weekly subcutaneous injection, but it is a very powerful medication that comes with serious side effects like diarrhea, nausea, and constipation. It also requires a prescription and in some cases might be best served in conjunction with therapy for things like underlying eating disorders.

These drugs require a health consultation and prescriptions with weekly in-person visits for your subcutaneous injections in many cases. Depending on your location you can come to our treatment centers for your injections and other prescription medications as well as therapy sessions for underlying conditions like eating disorders. You can also discuss your options for Telehealth services including prescription medications and telepsychiatry. 

What Other Treatment Do You Need?

In addition to a prescription for GLP-1 weight loss therapy, you might require other treatment for co-occurring disorders like anxiety or depression, eating disorders, or addiction.

This might extend to an outpatient treatment plan that empowers you to understand your motivation for weight loss, things that might have been contributing factors to eating disorders, depression, or other addictions developed in your pursuit of weight loss.
