What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?

A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive mental health assessment conducted by a licensed psychiatric provider. During your appointment, we’ll take the time to understand your emotional, psychological, and physical health so we can accurately diagnose mental health conditions and recommend appropriate treatment options.

A psychiatric evaluation can help:

  • Diagnose mental health conditions
  • Clarify an existing diagnosis
  • Evaluate whether medication may be beneficial
  • Review previous mental health treatment
  • Identify contributing medical or lifestyle factors
  • Develop an individualized treatment plan

When Should You Schedule a Psychiatric Evaluation?

Many people seek a psychiatric evaluation when emotional or behavioral symptoms begin affecting daily life. Whether your symptoms developed recently or have been ongoing for years, an evaluation can help determine the most appropriate next steps.

You may benefit from a psychiatric evaluation if you’re experiencing:

    • Persistent anxiety or excessive worry
    • Depression or prolonged sadness
    • Difficulty concentrating or possible ADHD
    • Mood swings
    • Panic attacks
    • Sleep disturbances
    • Trauma-related symptoms
    • Increased irritability
    • Low motivation or energy
    • Difficulty managing stress
    • Changes in appetite
    • Questions about psychiatric medications

Early evaluation and treatment may help improve your quality of life and prevent symptoms from worsening.

    • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
    • Mood Disorders
    • Insomnia related to mental health
    • Co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your first appointment is designed to help us understand your unique experiences and goals.

During your psychiatric evaluation, your provider may discuss:

    • Your current symptoms and concerns
    • Personal and family mental health history
    • Medical history and current medications
    • Lifestyle factors, including sleep, stress, and substance use
    • Previous mental health treatment
    • Your goals for treatment and recovery

Every evaluation is personalized, and you’ll have time to ask questions and discuss your concerns.

    Services We Don’t Provide

Our psychiatric evaluations are intended to support diagnosis and ongoing mental health treatment. We do not provide evaluations for the following purposes:

    • Court-ordered, custody, legal, forensic, occupational, or Social Security evaluations
    • Disability evaluations or appointments solely to complete disability (SSDI) paperwork. Patients seeking ongoing psychiatric treatment may discuss necessary documentation with their provider after establishing care.
    • Neuropsychological evaluations or testing for learning disorders, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, and similar conditions
    • Psychiatric evaluations required for military service, pilot certification, Peace Corps participation, or other employment or occupational clearances
    • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) evaluations, unless you have been specifically referred to psychiatry by your primary care provider or neurologist
    • Evaluations related to auto accidents, personal injury claims, or workers’ compensation cases

If you’re unsure whether your needs are appropriate for our psychiatric services, please contact our team before scheduling an appointment. We’ll be happy to answer your questions and help direct you to the most appropriate provider if needed.

Can I Receive Medication After My Evaluation?

If medication is clinically appropriate, your psychiatric provider may prescribe medication during or shortly after your evaluation. Medication recommendations are always based on your symptoms, diagnosis, medical history, and treatment goals.

Not everyone needs medication. For some individuals, therapy or a combination of therapy and medication provides the best outcome.
